City services at a glance
Marine on St. Croix is governed by a mayor and city council who meet at the Village Hall, 121 Judd Street. For anything official — permits, fees, ordinances, elections — use the city’s own website, marineonstcroix.org, or call the city office at (651) 433-3636. A few things newcomers often ask about:
- Garbage, recycling and the compost site. The city runs a compost site for yard waste and organizes periodic collection days such as Heavy Metal Day for bulky items. Household hazardous waste goes to Washington County’s Environmental Center.
- Boat moorage. Small boats (up to 16 feet long and 6 feet wide) can be moored at city launches with a permit.
- Park and hall rentals. City parks, trails and the hall can be reserved for events; apply at least 14 days ahead.
- Oakland Cemetery. The city owns and maintains a non-denominational cemetery on the west side of the village.
- Planning and zoning. Marine is updating its long-range Comprehensive Plan; residents can follow and comment on the process through the city.
Local organizations
A village of a few hundred households supports a surprising number of groups:
- Marine Restoration Society — founded in 1964 to maintain the village’s historic public buildings and celebrate its heritage.
- Marine Community Library — in the Village Hall.
- Marine Mills Folk School — classes in traditional crafts and skills, and a fall festival.
- Marine Film Society and the Marine Candlelight Series — film and music in the village.
- Marine Village School and Red Bridge Preschool.
- Fire and safety department — which also runs the June street dance.
- Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed District — protects the lakes, streams and groundwater around the village.
